Pro-Khalistani activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has appealed to Sikh soldiers serving in the Indian Army not to fight for India in case of a war against Pakistan, highlighting that Pakistan is a "friendly" nation for Sikhs and the Khalistani cause.
In a video message, Pannun stated, "If India attacks Pakistan, then it would be the last war for India and PM Modi. The Punjabis on the Indian side would provide langar for the Pakistani army," according to Dawn.
In another agitating video, Pannun put India on the mat, declaring that if India strikes Pakistan for striking back at the Pahalgam terror attack, it will be "the last war" for India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sikhs For Justice leader also dropped a wink that in such a scenario, Punjabis on the Indian side of the border would serve langar (free food) to the Pakistani army.
Pannun later urged the Sikh soldiers with stick to talk, "Pakistan is not an enemy but a friendly state, which would be our neighbour if we can free Punjab.
He further said, "This is the moment to spurn Narendra Modi's jingoism war. Don't fight against Pakistan. Pakistan is not your enemy. Pakistan will be and is a friendly state to the Sikh nation and Khalistan. When we free Punjab, Pakistan will be our neighbour.".
India-Pakistan relations have been on the rise ever since the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that killed 26, of whom 25 were Indian citizens. The event has increased diplomatic and military efforts by India, with Prime Minister Modi granting absolute operational autonomy to Indian defense personnel to determine the timing and size of the reaction.
In this context, Pannun's statement appears to be an attempt to whip up Sikh soldiers' emotions, although his statements about Sikhs and Punjabis remain largely unsubstantiated and inflammatory.
In the midst of these tensions, Pakistani authorities have hinted that an Indian military strike may be on the cards. The Pakistani stock market saw a dramatic downturn on Wednesday in response to these reports, though India has yet to confirm any such initiatives.
Pannun, continuing his inflammatory rhetoric, accused the Indian government, stating, “This is Narendra Modi’s government that is behind the Pahalgam Hindu massacre.”
The assault on Pahalgam, where a Nepali national was also attacked, sparked nationwide outrage throughout India and ignited global outrage. The assault had initially been blamed on an offshoot of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba known as The Resistance Front. But when India accelerated preparations for retaliatory action, the outfit later disowned responsibility for the attack.
