'Indian government making it unbelievably difficult': Justin Trudeau on India-Canada diplomatic row

Trudeau remarked, "The Indian government is creating an incredibly challenging situation, disrupting the daily lives of millions of people in both India and Canada, and all of this is happening in direct violation of fundamental diplomatic principles."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday said that the actions of the Indian government against Canadian diplomats were causing significant disruptions in the lives of millions of people in both countries. Trudeau's remarks came in response to Canada's recent decision to recall 41 diplomats in the face of India's reported warning to revoke their diplomatic status. The dispute stemmed from Trudeau's previous comments suggesting possible Indian involvement in the June assassination of a Sikh terrorist in Canada.

Trudeau remarked, "The Indian government is creating an incredibly challenging situation, disrupting the daily lives of millions of people in both India and Canada, and all of this is happening in direct violation of fundamental diplomatic principles."

During a televised press conference in Brampton, Ontario, the Prime Minister expressed his deep concerns for the well-being and contentment of millions of Canadians with roots in the Indian subcontinent. He also noted that the expulsion of Canadian diplomats would have adverse effects on travel, trade, and Indian students studying in Canada.

Canada is home to approximately two million people of Indian heritage, representing 5% of its total population. India remains Canada's primary source of international students, accounting for nearly 40% of all study permit holders.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs swiftly dismissed allegations of violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, asserting, "The state of our bilateral relations, the significantly higher number of Canadian diplomats stationed in India, and their persistent interference in our internal affairs justify a balanced reduction in diplomatic presence, both in New Delhi and Ottawa," as stated in an official release.

As a result, Canada now maintains 21 diplomats in India, reflecting the diplomatic downscaling due to the escalating tensions between the two nations.
