India Tells UN It Supports 'Positive Developments' Towards Resolving Ukraine Conflict

P. Harish, who is India's permanent representative at the UN, said India was in favor of efforts to bring an end to the Ukraine War.

India on Thursday emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy in ending the present war in Ukraine and also underscored its concerns regarding its "collateral implications," like increased fuel prices, stating that nations of the Global South have been mostly left to fend for themselves.

P. Harish, who is India's permanent representative at the UN, said India was in favor of efforts to bring an end to the Ukraine War.

"We supported the Summit meeting in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. We welcome progress achieved during the Alaska Summit," Harish added in his General Assembly address on Thursday.

The Alaska meeting, organized on August 15 by US President Trump, featured Trump meeting with Russian President Putin to talk about peace steps.

“India welcomes recent positive developments in this direction” towards peace, Harish said.

Harish reiterated India’s offer of peace diplomacy, saying, “India stands ready to support diplomatic efforts for an early end to the conflict”.

He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagement with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Putin, and European leaders as efforts that enhance the prospects of peace.

Before meeting Putin, Zelensky also called PM Modi on Saturday and posted on X that he was ready to negotiate with the Russian president.

A in-person meeting between Zelensky and Putin is the next step in the peace plan set forth by Trump, which has so far remained unachieved.

“The wholehearted participation and commitment of all stakeholders are critical for lasting peace, ” Harish said during the Assembly’s debate on Ukraine.

He was hopeful about Trump's approach to Zelensky and his conversations with European leaders.

“We also note the subsequent diplomatic efforts by the US President in engaging with the Ukrainian President and European leaders in Washington, ” he said.
