In a move aimed at broadening access to space exploration, the US-based Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) and Blue Origin have announced a partnership with India for their upcoming human spaceflight initiative. This collaboration will see SERA offering Indian citizens the chance to secure a seat aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard reusable rocket, embarking on a brief yet exhilarating journey beyond the Karman line, the internationally-recognized boundary of space located 100 km above Earth.
As part of their commitment to inclusivity, SERA and Blue Origin plan to allocate six seats on the mission to individuals from nations with limited or no history of sending citizens to space. Participants in this groundbreaking venture will experience several minutes of weightlessness before making a controlled descent back to Earth's surface.
Expressing enthusiasm for India's involvement, Joshua Skurla, Co-Founder of SERA, highlighted the country's recent achievements in space exploration, noting India's distinction as the first nation to reach the Moon's South Pole. He emphasized SERA's mission to democratize space travel, aiming to make it accessible to individuals worldwide, including those in India who aspire to witness the marvels of space firsthand.
Interested Indian citizens can apply for the program by paying a nominal fee of approximately $2.50, covering necessary verification costs to ensure safety and fairness in the selection process. Candidates will have the opportunity to garner public support through their mission profiles, leveraging social media and other platforms to showcase their compelling stories.
Selected astronauts must meet Blue Origin's rigorous physical criteria and will undergo comprehensive training at the company's launch facility in West Texas, beginning three days prior to the scheduled flight. This initiative marks a significant step towards realizing the vision of inclusive space exploration, offering unprecedented opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to embark on an extraordinary journey beyond Earth's atmosphere.
