Five New Murder Cases Lodged Against Ousted Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

Four of these new cases were filed in Dhaka, while one was filed in Rajshahi. The 76-year-old former prime minister, along with several ex-ministers and police officials, has been named in these cases.

Five more cases of murder have been filed against Bangladesh's ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, taking the total number of cases filed against the Awami League chief to 71, a report by The Daily Star said.

Four of these new cases were filed in Dhaka, while one was filed in Rajshahi. The 76-year-old former prime minister, along with several ex-ministers and police officials, has been named in these cases.

In one case, Hasina has been accused alongside 48 others of being involved in the killing of Dulal alias Selim during protests in Jatrabari on August 3. Mostafa Kamal, the brother of the victim, filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saddam Hossain.

The second accuses her and 21 others of killing Mansur Miah, a machine operator at Buriganga Filling Station in Mohammadpur, on July 19.

The third case was filed against Hasina and 91 others in regard to the death of Miraz Hossain in the Sanarpar area of Demra on August 5. Khorshed Alam, brother of the victim, filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain.

Fourth against Hasina and 40 others for the killing of 21-year-old Nahidul Islam in Mirpur-10 on July 19. The case was filed by the victim's brother Md Sabuj with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan.

Others accused in these cases include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, former lawmakers Shamim Osman and Ramesh Chandra, Hasina's sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and former DMP commissioner Harun Or Rashid.

SM Salahuddin Ahmmed Shamim Sarkar, a member of Bagha upazila Chhatra Dal of Rajshahi, filed the case against Hasina, former state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam, and 52 others with the court of additional chief judicial magistrate. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Khaled Ali told this to Abu Siddque, officer-in-charge of Bagha police station.

With these new filings, the total number of cases filed against Hasina came up to 71.

Hasina resigned and jumped to India on August 5 amidst unprecedented student-led protests against her government's quota system in government jobs. Her administration was replaced with an interim government; a surprise appointment of 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as Chief Adviser was announced.

More than 230 people died in the violence which erupted since Hasina's administration went out, taking the death toll over 600 since the protests started mid-July.
