Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen sharply rebuked the United States on Thursday by saying that all efforts to pressurize Denmark into giving up control over Greenland are unacceptable as well as directly against international law.
Addressing a press conference in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, Frederiksen made it explicit that territorial sovereignty is not up for bargaining. "You can't annex other nations—not even in the name of international security," she declared, affirming the need to respect national borders and territorial integrity.
She also reiterated that these principles were put in place after World War II to make sure that the smaller countries would not have to live in fear of being dominated by the large ones. "These principles were adopted after World War II so that small countries would not have to fear large ones," added Frederiksen.
