Authorities in Boulder, Colorado, have arrested a suspect after a suspected terror attack injured multiple people, officials said.
At a press conference, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said emergency dispatch fielded multiple calls at 1:26 p.m. local time (1926 GMT) about an incident at the county courthouse in downtown Boulder, according to a report from Xinhua news agency.
When they responded to the scene, responding officers found multiple victims with burn and other bodily injuries.
A spokesperson for "Run For Their Lives," an organization that conducts weekly walks to educate about Israeli hostages in Gaza, informed local TV channel KUSA that five people were burned in the attack.
The organizer of the group clarified that upon arriving at the old courthouse a block away from the 13th and Pearl Streets intersection, one man was already waiting and was said to be holding bottles. He allegedly hurled them toward the group and injured five individuals. One woman was seriously injured and had to roll on the ground in order to extinguish the flames, the report added.
FBI Director Kash Patel commented on the incident in a social media message, "We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado." He stated, "We already have local law enforcement and agents in place, and will provide updates as we learn more.
Redfaren Chief condemned the event calling it, "unacceptable", but added that it was too soon to speculate on the intent behind the attacker.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis also took to social media, saying, "I am following the situation in Boulder, and my thoughts are with the individuals injured and affected by this despicable act of terrorism," going on, "Acts of hate in any form are unacceptable."
Showing solidarity, Indian MP Shashi Tharoor, who is spearheading an international multi-party delegation focused on issues related to terrorism, tweeted on X:
"Members of the Indian MPs' delegation heard with alarm about the terror attack in Boulder, Colorado today. We are relieved there was no loss of life. We all subscribe to Secy of State @SecRubio's view that 'terror has no place' in our countries."
