The British parliament recently approved a bill that made the legalization of assisted dying for terminally ill persons with divided opinions across the nation.
The House of Commons debate on Friday lasted for five hours, ending with the decision of 330 MPs against it and 275 for it, said a report from Xinhua news agency.
This bill, known as the Terminally Ill Adults Bill or End of Life Bill, will introduce allowing adults with terminal illnesses to request and receive assistance in ending their own life under safeguards and protections. Connected purposes are also provided in the bill.
Under the proposed bill, a person aged 18 years or older residing in England and Wales diagnosed with a terminal illness, which will lead to death within six months, is eligible to apply for assistance to end their life. They should have mental capacity to make an informed, voluntary decision.
Each case would therefore require High Court approval. The individual would have to self-administer the approved substance upon reflection, which again involved a second declaration where his intent was reaffirmed in the process.
