Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned US President Donald Trump saying he "should not interfere" in Brazil's internal affairs.
We need to learn how to provide people with what they require: affection, comfort and treat them with love. That is the difference between caring and governing, because the correct word isn't governing, but caring," Lula said at a ceremony in Sorocaba, Sao Paulo state on Thursday, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Lula pointed out that he is committed to taking care of Brazil and reasserted that Trump must leave the affairs of the country alone.
Pointing out that the defense of sovereignty is not just the defense of borders and resources, he continued, "It is about defending the people. That is what the sovereignty of the country is all about. That is why we are not intimidated by being shouted at. In fact, we are courteous. I do not shout at anyone."
Trump last week called Brazil a "horrible trading partner" and called the trial of ex-Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro a "political execution."
On July 30, the Trump administration threatened to put a 50 per cent tariff on Brazilian imports and to sanction Alexandre de Moraes, a judge of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court presiding over the trial against Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is charged with trying to take over power after losing the 2022 presidential election.
Earlier, on August 14, President Lula reiterated that Brazil would not yield to the United States, responding to Trump's assertion that Brazil is a "horrible trading partner."
"It's a falsehood when the US President says that Brazil is a bad trading partner. Brazil is good, it just won't bow down to the US government," Lula stated at an event in Pernambuco, a state in northeastern Brazil.
Lula went on to say that "democracy is judging Bolsonaro," reiterating that the judiciary process, and not outside views, must rule Brazil.
