‘Betrayal’:  Sacked UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman launches scathing attack on PM Rishi Sunak

In a pointed letter to the fellow Indian-origin leader, Braverman asserted that the current government plan is ineffective and suggested that either Sunak's governance style is incapable, or there was never an intention to keep the promises.

In the aftermath of her dismissal as the UK's Home Secretary, Suella Braverman has forcefully criticized Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, accusing him of a "betrayal" in failing to fulfill promises on curbing illegal immigration and addressing street extremism.

In a pointed letter to the fellow Indian-origin leader, Braverman asserted that the current government plan is ineffective and suggested that either Sunak's governance style is incapable, or there was never an intention to keep the promises.

Braverman particularly emphasized Sunak's failure to deliver on his commitment to do "whatever it takes" to prevent small boats from crossing the Channel—an aspect she deemed crucial when accepting the position in October of the previous year.

"Either your distinctive style of government means you are incapable of doing so. Or, as I must surely conclude now, you never had any intention of keeping your promises," she wrote in her letter.

Her removal led to Foreign Secretary James Cleverly assuming the Home Office role, while former Prime Minister David Cameron made a political comeback, taking Cleverly's former position.

Acknowledging Braverman's service, a No 10 spokesman stated, "The Prime Minister was proud to appoint a strong, united team yesterday focused on delivering for the British people."

The immediate cause for her dismissal was the accusation of fuelling tensions ahead of pro-Palestinian marches in London amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. Braverman argued in an article for the Times about a perceived "double standard" in police treatment of protesters.

In her scathing letter, Braverman accused Sunak of inadequately addressing rising antisemitism and extremism on the streets. She urged legislative action to ban hate marches and combat increasing racism, intimidation, and terrorist glorification threatening community cohesion. Braverman concluded by accusing the Prime Minister of avoiding "tough decisions" to minimize political risk.

The reshuffling of roles in response to Braverman's departure was portrayed as a move toward a strong and united government focused on the welfare of the British people.
