During the annual discourse of the assembly, where the United Nations' paramount platform for peace and security is evaluated, Francis passionately conveyed that the council's effectiveness and credibility are destined to progressively diminish without fundamental structural reform

The resolution proposed by Council President Brazil received 12 votes, including from Washington’s allies France and Japan, while another ally, Britain, and Russia abstained, but it was negated by the US veto.

Foreign Ministers Mauro Vieira of Brazil, Annalena Baerbock of Germany, and Yoko Kamikawa of Japan participated in the meeting, while in the absence of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, India was represented by Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West).

“I should pay tribute to the Indian presidency. The Indian presidency did its best in order to have the South's voice represented and did its best to put development agenda in the centre of the discussions of the G20," he said on Wednesday.

Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan changed its name internationally to conform to the Turkish language name last year and just a letter from Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusogalu to Guterres made the new nomenclature formal at the UN.
