"The Danish authorities must act within the framework of their international responsibilities and take the necessary measures to prevent these heinous acts that fuel hatred against the religion of Islam and its billions of followers," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We will follow the (implementation of) promises and guarantees given by the Swedish side... and take action according to the steps Sweden takes," Erdogan told reporters on his flight back to Turkey on Friday, according to the state-run TRT broadcaster. "It will be in Sweden's favour if the Nordic country takes concrete steps in the fight against terrorist organisations and the extradition of terrorists," the President noted.

"Our parliament will... make the right decision in line with the interests of our country," the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan added on Thursday when returning from the NATO summit held in Lithuania's capital Vilnius on July 11-12. Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership in February 2022.

Taking to Twitter late Monday night, Stoltenberg said: "Glad to announce that after the meeting I hosted with (Turkish President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan & Swedish PM (Ulf Kristersson), President Erdogan has agreed to forward Sweden's accession protocol to the Grand National Assembly ASAP & ensure ratification. 

Earlier on Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the European Union to resume the long-stalled membership talks with Ankara, in exchange for a green light from Turkey to Sweden's NATO bid, Xinhua news agency reported. On Sunday, The Turkish President held a phone conversation with his US counterpart Joe Biden to also discuss Sweden's NATO bid.

The two leaders also discussed Ukraine's position in NATO, the delivery of F-16 fighter jets and Turkey's efforts to join the EU, according to a statement by Erdogan's office released on Sunday. During the phone call, Erdogan noted "Sweden has taken some steps in the right direction" toward the ratification of its NATO bid by making changes in its anti-terrorism legislation, said the statement.

"While strengthening our relations with Ukraine, we did not allow our relations with the Russian Federation to deteriorate," Erdogan said at a rally in the eastern province of Bayburt on Saturday, after his meeting with visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"We are making efforts to extend the duration of the Black Sea grain deal," Erdogan at the press conference on Friday night. The Turkish leader noted that almost 33 million tonnes of grain have been delivered to those in need under the deal.

The aim of Thursday's talks between Stoltenberg and the foreign ministers of Sweden and Turkey in Brussels was to overcome Turkey's objections to Sweden joining the alliance, Xinhua news agency reported.

In a series of tweets, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said: "I condemn the vile action in Sweden against our holy book, Quran, on the first day of the Eid al-Adha. "It is unacceptable to allow these anti-Islamic actions under the pretext of freedom of expression. To turn a blind eye to such heinous acts is to be complicit in them."
