The Meerut boy shot 586 to be tied with Chinese Bowen Zhang after qualification, but as the Indian had more 'inner 10s' (27) to his name, he took the first spot foing into the finals. The other Indian in the fray, Abhishek Verma, was in the reckoning for a place in the finals. But he shot two 9s followed by two 8s in his last four shots, which meant that he finished 17th with a score of 575.

Mirabai, ranked third in the world, had a total lift of 202kg with 87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk. Hou Zhihui of China won the gold medal, setting a new Olympic record of 210kg. She set the record too in snatch with 94kg and 116kg in clean and jerk.

"The Advisory Committee of IOA has recommended cash award of Rs 75 lakh for each gold medal winner; Rs. 40 lakh silver and Rs. 25 lakh to the bronze medal winners. It also recommended a sum of Rs. 1 lakh to each athlete representing the country at the Tokyo Olympic Games," the IOA informed in a release on Thursday.
