New pictures of Mehul Choksi emerge, show injury marks

Antigua News Room, a news outlet in Antigua and Barbuda, posted several pictures of Choksi with swollen eyes and several bruises on his arm. In a tweet it said, "First pictures emerge of Mehul Choksi behind bars." On Thursday night, Choksi's lawyer Vijay Agarwal had told IANS that Choksi was forced to get into a vessel from Antigua and was taken to Dominica. He also claimed that there were marks on Choksi's body, implying the use of force.

Justice M.E. Birnie Stephenson, in her order, extended the injunction on removing Choksi from Dominica "until further or other hearing of this application is continued until the further hearing of this matter" The next hearing of the case is scheduled for June 2. The court's decision came while it was hearing a habeas corpus plea filed by Choksi's lawyers.

His lawyer alleged that Choksi was denied legal rights at the island and was not even allowed to meet his legal team initially, Hindustan Times reported. Dominican authorities have clarified that the PNB bank fraud-accused businessman would be extradited to Antigua and not India. Choksi, 63, is involved in the Rs 12,000 crore PNB scam and is wanted in India for charges of fraud.

He also claimed that Choksi was kept there and then on Monday he was taken to the police station but the news of his was broken only on Wednesday and there are marks on his body of the force. His remarks came after Choksi, who is wanted by the CBI and the ED in connection with the over Rs 13,500 crore PNB loan fraud case, has reportedly been taken into custody in Dominica.
Deporting Choksi to India directly may not be easy

While Choksi's lawyer Vijay Agarwal says that the moment the businessman, who is also the chairman of the Gitanjali group, acquired the citizenship of Antigua he ceased to be a citizen of India and hence legally as per Immigration and Passport Act Section 17 and 23, he can only be deported to Antigua.

The Commissioner of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, Atlee Rodney, said the force is currently following up on the whereabouts of the Indian businessman who is rumoured to be missing at this time, local media reported. Choksi, an accused in the over Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case along with his nephew Nirav Modi, has been residing in Antigua and Barbuda since January 4, 2018.
