Police officials confirmed that Salman is not a religious leader, but a history-sheeter of the Dargah police station and has been a criminal. There are more than a dozen cases registered against him for murder, firing, assault and intimidation. On his mother's complaint, Salman Chishti was arrested by the Dargah police station on charges of breach of peace. He is accused of attempting to evict his mother from the house by intimidating her.

Taking suo moto cognisance of Akhilesh's tweet on July 1, the NCW has asked the state government to initiate action against the SP leader under the relevant provisions of law. The NCW has also asked the state government to inform it of the action taken within three days. However, the bench reprimanded Sharma for making irresponsible comments against a religion during a TV debate. It said, "These remarks are very disturbing...shows her arrogance. What is her business to make such remarks?"

"I am deeply shocked by the heinous murder in Udaipur. Brutality in the name of religion cannot be tolerated. Those who spread terror by this cruelty should be punished immediately," tweeted Rahul Gandhi reacting to the Udaipur incident. Appealing to maintain the peace, he wrote in the same tweet in Hindi, "We all have to defeat hate together. I appeal to all, please maintain peace and brotherhood."

This is the second time that Sharma has ignored the summons from the city police. Earlier, she was sent a notice from the Narkeldanga Police station under Kolkata Police's eastern suburban division where she was asked to be present at the said police station on June 20. However, at that time too, she refused to turn up at the last moment citing security reasons.

The incident occurred in Hasmathpet locality late on Monday night when some persons took out candle light rally to express solidarity with Sharma, who was suspended by the BJP on June 5 after her blasphemous remarks triggered an outrage from Muslim nations. The participants who carried placards raised slogans in support of the suspended leader.
