David Warner's absence pinches Australia, Matthew Wade pitch-forked into opener's role
Wade, 33, is surely a temporary arrangement and once Warner gets match fit he would walk into the XI, replacing him. Australia have been playing Wade as a specialist middle order batsman while Tim Paine, who is now captain as well, keeping wickets. Wade also opened the innings in the recent T20 series against India, and captained Australia in a game in Aaron Finch's absence.

India had taken a first-innings lead of 131 thanks to a century by skipper Ajinkya Rahane. The Aussies, who resumed on 133 for six, added 67 more runs before getting bowled out at the stroke of lunch in the extended first session. Mohammed Siraj picked two of the four wickets to fall on the day to take his innings tally to three for 37 while Jasprit Bumrah picked one. R Ashwin also took one wicket.

India lost two wickets in each of the first two sessions but did not allow any breakthrough to Australia in the final session.

Australia were dismissed for 195 in their first innings on Saturday. India had taken a 53-run lead in the first Test at Adelaide last week although they eventually lost the game by eight wickets after being bowled out for 36 in the second innings. Back in 1985-86, India had got lead in the first Test at Adelaide, making 520 to Australia's 381, and in the second Test in Melbourne, scoring 445 against Australia's 262.
Melbourne Test, Day 2: Rahane's half-century takes India to 189/5 at tea
India was 189 for five at the end of the second session which was announced a bit early due to rain. India lost the wickets of Hanuma Vihari and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant while adding 99 in the second session. Vihari fell for 21 to leave India at 116 for four. He had added 52 for the fourth wicket with Rahane.
