MCD polls: Congress leaders seek 'structural change' after humiliating loss

Congress steering committee member Abhishek Manu Singhvi tweeted: "Although it's nice to see a tightly contested election between AAP & BJP, I am deeply disappointed at Congress result. Introspection and structural change vital! #MCDPolls" The Congress was at its lowest point in the polls, scoring less than from last election as the BJP and the AAP were the main contestants.

Another major concern for the party is that even though its vote share, at 42.05 per cent, was double of 2017's 21.09 per cent, it has lost around 12 per cent of its vote share since the last Assembly polls. In the 2020 Assembly elections, the AAP secured 53.75 per cent vote share to win 62 out of the total 70 seats, while the BJP's vote share increased by about 3 per cent from the polls when it bagged 8 seats with 38.5 per cent votes.
'BJP could have focused more on MCD polls had Gujarat, Himachal elections didn't coincide'

Asserting that the BJP would perform well in Gujarat where counting of votes will be taken up on Thursday, Sarma said, "In Delhi, contrary to the predictions (by exit polls) of 60-70 seats, we (BJP) performed much better to win 104 wards. Had the Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh did not coincide with the MCD polls, we could have focused more on the MCD elections."

The results of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections for which polling was held on December 4 gave a clear majority to the AAP which bagged 134 of the 250 wards, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finishing second with 104 wards. In fact, the nine wards that went to the Congress' fold was mainly due to the support the grand old party received from the Muslim electorate.

The AAP is ahead of the BJP but is yet to secure a comfortable lead as the counting of votes is underway for the December 4 polls. Speaking to IANS, Harish Khurana said, "Delhi's next mayor will be from the BJP. We are still confident of winning the MCD for the fourth straight time. Since the Mayor is chosen by councillors, let them decide but ultimately the mayor will be from our party".
Delhi's verdict a message for nation to do positive politics: Kejriwal after AAP's MCD win

While addressing the party members at AAP headquarters here, Kejriwal said the people were fed up with the negative politics and will not tolerate that anymore. "We don't believe in negative politics and don't do the politics of abusing one another. We had asked the vote in the name of good governance, better education system and healthcare and for the honest government, and the people have blessed us with their support," Kejriwal said.
