After 355 years, a salute to Shivaji's 'great slip' from Mughal grip

On August 17, a 30-member group left the Agra Fort on the same presumed route taken by Shivaji, then 36, and his minor son Prince Sambhaji, 9, to break free from the 99-day long grasp of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and sneaked from there to reach the Rajgad Fort after a gruelling three-week long journey.
Maharashtra flood toll climbs to 209, 8 untraced so far

As many as 434,185 people have been evacuated and relocated to safer areas after their homes were submerged or badly damaged in the flood waters, which reached up to 20 feet high in some areas, with 1,351 villages directly affected by the rain fury. The largest evacuation took place from western Maharashtra districts, followed by Konkan districts.
Flood-scarred Maharashtra's toll zooms to 149, 2.29 lakhs evacuated

In what is billed as the biggest flood rescue operations in the state in decades, over 2.29 lakh people have been evacuated to safer areas after their homes were submerged in floodwaters, in some places up to 20 feet high. As many as 50 people were injured and are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur.
30 buried in Maharashtra hillslide, many others trapped

The incident took place in the small Talai village in the hilly stretch in Maharashtra's Raigad district, which has been clobbered with heavy downpours for the past three days. As per preliminary information, the hillock slid and crashed on around three dozen homes below, trapping a majority of the victims in the boulders, stones and slush which hurtled at full force.

Several towns and cities like Bhiwandi, Badlapur, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan, Dombivali, Chiplun, Khed, Sawantwadi, Mangaon, Mandangad, Kudal, Mahad, and others were inundated in three to six feet water, and higher in some low-lying areas. Flood waters rushed into shops, offices, homes and ground floor flats, while around half a dozen homes were damaged or collapsed, many big and small vehicles were fully submerged or washed away, and people remained trapped in their homes for hours.
'Sorry, will not interfere': SC rejects Maha plea to cap non-Covid costs

A bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and M.R. Shah told the state government counsel that "non-Covid patients are bound to move to private hospitals, when you don't have necessary infrastructure. Sorry, we will not interfere". Advocate Rahul Chitnis, representing the Maharashtra government, submitted that the appeal was filed challenging the high court's October 23, 2020 order.

In yet another landslide, a five-member family was wiped out and three others rescued when a portion of the Gholainagar hillock in the Parsik hills locality caved in and crushed several hutments in Kalwa suburb of Thane. The incident occurred this afternoon when loose rocks and soil from the hillock suddenly started moving and falling onto the huts below, catching many of the victims unawares.
18 killed in Mumbai rain-related incidents

As Mumbai slept the skies opened up with torrential rains measuring between 150 mm to over 200 mm in some areas, submerging many areas and playing havoc with road and rail traffic. According to the BMC Disaster Cell and NDRF, at least 12 persons were killed when a wall collapsed after a tree fell at Vashi Naka in the Chembur area around 1 a.m.

According to the NDRF and BMC, the landslide which occurred at around 1 a.m., crushed four to five hutments in the area. The NDRF and other teams which rushed there for rescue operations, have retrieved at least 10 bodies so far. Another six to seven people are feared trapped under the mounds of earth and efforts are underway to rescue them.
Pilot killed, trainee injured as aircraft crashes in fields

The incident occurred around 4 p.m., when the light training aircraft suddenly came crashing down, killing the pilot instantly and injuring the flying trainee, while horrified villagers informed the local police and district authorities, who rushed there led by local Tehsildar Anil Gavit. The victims have been identified as pilot-instructor Noorul Ameen, 28, hailing from Bengaluru, and trainee-pilot Anshika Gurjar, 22.
