Iraqi parliament to elect new president on Feb 7

The decision was made after a meeting between Parliamentary Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and his two deputies, during which they agreed to hold another parliamentary session to continue constitutional processes toward forming a new government, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement issued by the parliament. The meeting also decided to announce the names of the candidates who are eligible to run for Iraqi president on January 31, it said.
Gunmen attack office of Iraqi Deputy Speaker

The incident took place on Wednesday evening when gunmen threw a hand grenade at Abdullah's office in the Rahim Awa neighborhood in central Kirkuk, some 250 km north of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua news agency.
6 rockets hit Iraqi military airbase housing US advisers

The attack took place in the evening, when the rockets landed in Ayn al-Asad Airbase without knowing the casualties, an Iraqi army source told Xinhua news agency on the condition of anonymity. The rockets were fired from a village located some 15 km east of the airbase.
Iraqi PM confirms end of US-led combat mission in Iraq

"The combat mission of the international coalition has ended and all the combat equipment withdrew outside Iraq," al-Kadhimi said on Wednesday in a tweet posted on the official Twitter page of his media office. "The role of the coalition has become limited to advise and support according to the strategic dialogue," the Iraqi Prime Minister added.
4 IS militants killed in airstrikes in Iraq

Acting on intelligence reports, the Iraqi aircraft conducted 14 airstrikes on IS positions and hideouts in Himreen mountain range in the north of the provincial capital Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, Xinhua news agency quoted Mohammed al-Azawi, a local leader of the paramilitary Hashd Shaabi forces, as saying. The airstrikes resulted in the killings of four IS militants, al-Azawi said.
Turkish Parliament ratifies motion on launching cross-border operations in Iraq, Syria

The motion, passed on Tuesday, will authorise cross-border operations to be carried out in Iraq and Syria from October 30, 2021 to October 30, 2023, Xinhua News Agency reported. The previous cross-border motions were only for one-year duty. The motion also allowed the deployment of foreign armed forces in Turkey with the principles to be determined by the president.
Iraqi PM announces capture of key IS terrorist

Al-Kadhimi said on Twitter on Monday that the Iraqi Intelligence Service carried out a complex operation outside the country to arrest Ghazwan al-Zawbai, nicknamed Abu Ubaidah Baghdad, reports Xinhua news agency. Al-Zawbaie is also involved in at least four deadly suicide bomb attacks in Baghdad during 2016 and 2017, Rasoul added.
3 soldiers killed in IS attacks in eastern Iraq

The incident took place on Sunday evening when IS militants sporadically opened fire on Iraqi army outposts in the Udheim area, some 60 km north of the provincial capital Baquba, Xinhua news agency reported. The attacks resulted in the killing of three soldiers and the wounding of two others, Mohammed al-Obaidi from the local tribal fighters told the news agency.

In a televised speech on Friday, al-Sadr said that he had received a paper on reforms in the country pledged by the political parties, calling him to return to the elections, reports Xinhua news agency. "We received the reform paper from politicians we trust, and we found it to be in accordance with our aspirations," al-Sadr said. "We will participate in the elections with determination to save and reform Iraq from corruption," he added.
