Djokovic overcame a cut in his left hand that saw his racquet dripping with blood immediately after the crowd had been cleared from the stands in the fourth set due to 11 pm night curfew in Paris. Even though Djokovic won the first set with a scoreline that suggested the game was one-sided, it took him 52 minutes to seal it.

World No.3 Nadal, will play the winner of the contest between world No.1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Matteo Berrettini of Italy on Friday. Djokovic, the 2016 French Open champion and winner of 18 majors, leads 29-28 in his famed rivalry with Nadal. The 35-year-old Spaniard, however, beat his arch-rival in the Italian Open final in Rome recently.

World No.33 Barbora ended American teenager Coco Gauff's hopes of reaching her maiden Grand Slam semi-final with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory. Maria, who is now the highest-ranked player in the field, is just two wins away from a historic maiden Grand Slam singles title for a Greek woman. A win at the end of the week could also propel her into the top 10.

The two-hour-21-minute battle saw Tsitsipas enter his third consecutive Grand Slam semi-final. He had also entered the semi-final at last year's French Open where he lost to Novak Djokovic. On Tuesday, the Greek star tennis player 73 per cent of first service points and 77 per cent of second service points. He also converted four out of the seven break-points he got.
After initial hiccups, Alexander Zverev enters maiden French Open semis

Zverev will take on the winner of the quarterfinal match between second seed Russian Daniil Medvedev and fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on Friday. The 24-year-old German had a tough first set where his serve was broken thrice before he regained composure to down 22-year-old Fokina in one hour and 36 minutes.

Tamara, the 23-year-old world No.85, becomes the first Slovenian to make the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament, with her quarter-final win in two hour and 26 minutes. Thanks to the result, Tamara will break into the top 50 for the first time when the WTA rankings are announced next week.

Nadal has now reached 15 quarterfinals at Roland Garros and is tied alongside world No.1 Novak Djokovic. The win also means Nadal and Djokovic are on a collision course in the semi-final. Earlier in the day, Djokovic came back from a two-set deficit to overcome Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti who retired in the fifth set and the Serbian moved into the quarterfinals.

Zverev, who defeated the likes of Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini on way to victory in Madrid Open last month, was in impeccable form as he did not allow Nishikori to get into a position of challenging him. Coming into his fourth round match, Nishikori had won two five-setters. However, he struggled to take the German to the distance.

Elena stunned the 23-time Grand Slam champion in one hour and 17-minute. The Kazakh was playing in her first ever round-of-16 match in a Grand Slam tournament and her 64th. Elena converted five of her seven break points, besides winning nearly 60 per cent of points returning the Serena's second service.

No.4 seed Sofia overcame first-set blues to beat compatriot and No.28 seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-1 6-4 for a berth in the fourth round for the third year running. No.24 seed Coco Gauff of the US also made it to the pre-quarterfinals here for the first time after her compatriot, No.13 seed Jennifer Brady, retired due to a foot injury after losing the first set 1-6.
