No plausible reason for long Covid to be less with Omicron: Experts

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), long Covid "is a range of symptoms that can last weeks or months after first being infected with the virus that causes Covid-19 or can appear weeks after infection. Long Covid can happen to anyone who has had Covid-19, even if their illness was mild, or if they had no symptoms". More than 50 long-term effects of Covid-19 have been detected. But the most common symptoms reported by Covid survivors four to 12 weeks after acute infection are headache, fatigue, sleep disturbance, concentration difficulties and abdominal pain.
At 15,097 fresh Covid cases, Delhi sees 41% rise in a day

Total 6 Covid deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 25,127. Meanwhile, the Covid infection in the city has climbed at 15.34 per cent, highest in last eight months. According to the Delhi Health department, the city had recorded 17.02 per cent positivity rate on May 12. The number of active Covid cases has jumped at 31,498 highest since May 21. According to the Health Department, Delhi had recorded the highest 35,683 active Covid cases on that day.
India reports 495 new Omicron cases, tally reaches 2,630

Of the total, 995 people have so far recovered, the Ministry said, adding that the variant has been detected in 26 states and UTs till date. Maharashtra tops the list with 797 Omicron cases, of which 330 patients have been discharged. The state reported 144 new Omicron cases in the last 24 hours.
India's Omicron tally crosses 1,000-mark, Maha tops with 450 cases

Among the 23 states and UTs that have reported the Omicron infection so far, Maharashtra tops the list with 450 cases of this variant. Of them, 125 patients have been discharged as per the health ministry data. Delhi has the second highest cases of Omicron infection at 320. However, 57 of them have been discharged from the hospital. Delhi is followed by Kerala with 109 Omicron cases. The Union health ministry on Friday morning said that the Omicron infection has so far spread into 23 states and UTs.
India records first 'Omicron death' in Maharashtra, state govt denies

A 52-year-old man in Pimpri Chinchwad, infected with Omicron,  reportedly died due to heart attack on December 28. However, the state health authorities have denied the Omicron infection to be the cause of death. The Pune health department authorities have refused to consider him as the first casualty of the new variant and stressed that the fatality was caused because of other underlying health conditions.

With the addition of the new fatalities, the nationwide death toll has spiked to 4,81,080. Meanwhile, the Omicron infection tally has climbed at 1,270 across the nation and of the total patients, 374 have been discharged from hospitals. So far, a total 23 states have reported the new variant, the Ministry said. Also in the last 24 hours, 7,585 patients recovered which increased the cumulative tally to 3,42,66,363.

As many as 200 Covid-19 patients have been admitted to hospitals in Delhi, of which only 102 belong to the city, he said while addressing a press conference. "Of these, Omicron variant has been found in 46 per cent cases," he said. Whether restrictions would be further strengthened or not will be decided in the next Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) meeting, he said, adding that the result of the restrictions or lockdown is seen after seven days of their imposition.

The tracker had aptly predicted the devastating second wave in May and had also forecast in August that India would see a slow burn in its Covid infections. "It is likely that India will see a period of explosive growth in daily cases and that the intense growth phase will be relatively short," Paul Kattuman, Professor at the Judge Business School at the varsity was quoted as saying to Bloomberg.
At 249, Delhi reports highest single-day Covid tally since June 13

Delhi on Saturday reported 249 fresh Covid-19 cases, the highest since June 13, with a positivity rate of 4.46 per cent, taking its overall tally to 14,43,062, data issued by the health department showed. . According to the official data, this rise is the highest since June 13 when the national capital had reported 255 cases with a positivity rate of 0.35 per cent.
