Delhi Court denies bail to Alt News co-founder Zubair, sends him to 14-day police custody

Zubair was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria at Patiala House Court as his four-day judicial custody in the case, in which he had allegedly hurt the sentiments of a community through a tweet, ended on Saturday. After hearing the detailed arguments of the parties, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate refused to grant relief to him.

In the latest development, the high court on Friday ordered Batra to step down as the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) following the removal of his his 'lifetime member' post. Now Batra's membership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will also come to an end as the coveted position is linked to his IOA presidency. He was made an IOC member in 2019. On April 6, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had initiated a preliminary inquiry against Batra for alleged misappropriation of public funds of Rs 35 lakh of Hockey India for personal use.

In the split verdict passed on Wednesday, Justice Rajiv Shakdher supported striking down the contentious exception in the Indian Penal Code's Section 375 which exempts forceful sexual intercourse by a man with his own wife from the offence of rape. "No amount of classification and verbal jugglery can alter that reality," he held. The opposing argument was that the position of a sex worker cannot be compared with persons bound by marriage.

"In my view, the tweets with regard to the subject matter of the present application are defamatory in nature and there is a link posted in the said tweets to the very same letters, the publication of which was injuncted by this Court vide orders dated 18th February 2022 and 24th February 2022," said Justice Amit Bansal in the order dated May 2.
Delhi HC nixes MEA order on clearance for top judges' foreign visits

The order by a division bench of Justices Rajiv Shakdher and Jasmeet Singh came as it heard a plea challenging the MEA order issued on July 13, 2021, requiring that the judges should get a political clearance with respect to their visits abroad. As per petitioner Aman Vachar, the order is not only infringed judges' rights to privacy but also amounted to degrading and diminishing the high office that they hold.
High court seeks Delhi govt's response on plea for more commercial courts

Hijab issue: Karnataka HC to pronounce verdict on Tuesday

The Karnataka High Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, is slated to pronounce the judgement on the hijab issue on Tuesday morning. The matter has been listed in the first half of the day. The three-judge bench, which also comprised Justice Krishna S. Dixit and Justice Khaji Jaibunnesa Mohiyuddin had reserved the matter for judgement earlier after hearing arguments and counterarguments.
Centre notifies appointment of four new judges in Delhi High Court

A notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice said that Neena Bansal Krishna, Dinesh Kumar Sharma, Anoop Kumar Mendiratta, and Sudhir Kumar Jain will assume charge of their respective offices as Judges of the High Court. Sudhir Kumar Jain is currently serving as the district and sessions judge at the Rouse Avenue Court while Neena Bansal Krishna was holding the office of the Principal District and Sessions Judge at Saket (South East) District Court.
