180 Indian Army teams ready to assist states in areas impacted by Cyclone Tauktae
In anticipation of assisting civil administration in undertaking rescue and relief operations due to severe cyclonic storm 'Tauktae', the Indian Army has mobilised columns and Engineer Task Forces (ETF) to the Western Coast from various parts of the Country. A total 180 teams -- three teams in each column -- and nine Engineer Task Forces (ETFs) spread over the geographical area are on standby at short notice factoring in all possible contingencies and Covid situation.
Cyclone Tauktae: 410 stranded on barges, Indian Navy ships to the rescue
In the first instance, 273 persons are struggling on a drifting barge near the Heera Oilfield at Bombay High Fields of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), around 175 km from Mumbai. Following an SOS from the Barge P305 which is adrift near the oilfields with the crew and ONGC personnel on board, the Indian Navy has dispatched two ships INS Kochi and INS Talwar to render assistance.

As per the IMD, Tauktae moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 18 kmph during past six hours and lay centered at 2.30 a.m. on Monday over the east-central Arabian Sea near about 360 km north-northwest of Panjim-Goa, 170 km south-southwest of Mumbai, 350 km south-southeast of Veraval, 310 km south-southeast of Diu and 900 km south-southeast of Karachi.

Categorised now as 'Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm', its effects were felt shortly after midnight of Sunday-Monday with many areas lashed by heavy rains, accompanied by lightning and thunder in some places, aggravated by powerful winds, as it whirled northwards from Sindhudurg-Ratnagiri towards Raigad-Mumbai en route to the Gujarat coast.

"Four isolated incidents occurred since late Saturday in Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts, as heavy rains induced by the cyclone lashed the state," Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) head Sunil Gavaskar told IANS.
One dead, trees uprooted as Cyclone Tauktae causes disruption in Goa
Sheetal Patil, 34, succumbed to injuries in the beach village of Anjuna after she was hit by a coconut tree which was uprooted in the cyclonic winds. According to Power Minister Nilesh Cabral, feeder electrical lines from other states have been damaged, which has resulted in a severe power outage.
Cyclonic Tauktae very likely to intensify in next 24 hrs
The cyclone is very likely to move north-northwestwards and reach Gujarat coast in the evening hours of May 17 and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva (Bhavnagar district) around May 18 early morning, said the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Forces prepare for Cyclone Tauktae, all flights to Lakshadweep suspended
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has suspended all scheduled flights to the Agatti Airport in Lakshadweep due to heavy rain projections till 10 am on Sunday. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has kept 16 transport aircraft and 18 helicopters on operational readiness in peninsular India. "One IL-76 aircraft has airlifted 127 personnel and 11 tonnes of cargo from Bhatinda to Jamnagar," the force said in a statement.
