Competition Commission gives conditional approval to Sony-Zee merger

The CCI's approval for the deal was given with certain modifications. The mega deal had been announced in September 2021. The CCI approved the proposed combination subject to the carrying out of modifications proposed by the parties, under Regulation 25(1) of the Competition Commission of India (Procedure in regard to the transaction of business relating to combinations) Regulations, 2011.
CCI approves acquisition of Prione by Amazon

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Wednesday approved the acquisition of Prione Business Services by e-commerce firm Amazon. Notably, Prione Business Services, is a joint venture between Catamaran and e-commerce firm Amazon. Earlier, the two firms announced their decision to not continue the joint venture beyond the current term to be ended in May 2022.
RIL-ACRE seeks CCI nod to buy Sintex Industries under insolvency proceedings

According to a report, RIL and ACRE have made bid to acquire Sintex Industries which is under insolvency proceedings. The report said that an approval from CCI is required before the resolution plan can receive the lenders' nod. At present, RIL, ARES Capital-backed ACRE, Welspun Group company Easygo Textiles, Trident, Himatsingka Ventures and GHFC have shown interest in Sintex Industries.
CAIT moves CCI against 'Chinese' firm Shopee for hurting Indian SMEs

In a petition submitted with the CCI, CAIT Chairman Praveen Khandelwal said that Shopee is offering hefty discounts on various products by selling them at an extremely low price, thereby hampering other competitors and adversely impacting the Indian marketplace. "Such predatory pricing is being done with a calculated view to eliminate the traditional and small scale businesses in the country. Thus, Shopee is conducting its business in India in violation of provisions of the Competition Act, 2002," Khandelwal said late on Thursday.
Crocin, ENO, Iodex ownership changes as CCI approves acquisition

The proposed combination involves collective acquisition of 100 per cent shares of the GlaxoSmithKline Asia Private Ltd, which will acquire the trademarks pertaining to "Iodex" and "Ostocalcium" brands in India alongwith the legal, economic, commercial and marketing rights of such brands and other associated assets (GSK Consumer Brands) from GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
CCI probing Google's 'dominance' in news aggregation space

In a 21-page order over a complaint filed by the Digital News Publishers Association, the Indian watchdog said that Google has broken the local antitrust laws. "The allegations of the informant, when seen in this vertically integrated ecosystem operated by Google, makes it prima facie appear that news publishers have no choice but to accept the terms and conditions imposed by Google," the CCI said in its order on Friday.
Future Retail says Amazon tried to browbeat CCI

"At this stage, the counsels to Amazon, in utter disregard to the norms and in utter disrespect to the Indian statutory regulatory authority refused to argue the matter and walked out of the proceedings in an attempt to browbeat the CCI," the FRL said in a letter to stock exchanges.
CCI penalises beer companies for cartelisation, UBL slapped Rs 750 cr penalty

The competition regulator has imposed a penalty of Rs 750 crore on UBL and Rs 120 crore on CIPL based on the evidence presented on their act of cartelisation. Allegations of cartelisation were levelled against these companies in various states and Union Territories, including through the platform of All India Brewers' Association (AIBA).
