With a quarter-final finish at the previous World Championships under his belt, Narender (+92kg) began his quest for a medal at the ongoing edition by defeating Muhammad Abroridinov of Tajikistan in a closely contested encounter by 4-1. Both pugilists who won bronze at the 2022 Asian Championships went all out in the neck-and-neck bout from the word go.

In the 60kg category, Varinder Singh went down fighting against Mujibillo Tursunov of Uzbekistan and exited the competition after suffering a 0-5 defeat. Playing from the Red corner, the two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Hussamuddin (57kg) made lightwork of Maced'nia's Alen Rustemovski in the opening round with a dominating 5-0 win.

The draw ceremony will take place on Sunday and the bouts will start from May 1. Hussamuddin and Shiva Thapa will lead the 13-member Indian team in the Men's World Boxing Championships. The 29-year-old Hussamuddin, the youngest of six brothers, four of whom are boxers, won bronze medals in the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games. In Tashkent, he will be competing in the men's 57 kg category and will be a medal contender.

Six-time Asian Championships medallist Shiva Thapa and 2019 Asian Championships silver medallist Deepak Bhoria will headline the Indian squad for the showpiece event. The Tashkent Championships have already seen a registration of around 640 boxers from 104 countries including that of seven defending World Champions like Sofiane Oumiha from France, Japan's Tomoya Tsuboi and Sewonrets Okazawa, Loren Alfonso from Azerbaijan, Saken Bibossinov from Kazakhstan and Cuba's Yoenlis Hernandez Martinez and Julio La Cruz.

Last Month, the EOC and the Polish Olympic Committee decided to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from the competition. "There will be no athletes representing the Russian Federation and Belarus at the European Games in Krakow. We will not allow this to happen regardless of the diplomatic efforts that are currently taking place," Marcin Nowak, president of the European Games Organising Committee had said.
