16 Dec 1971: When Pakistan Army surrendered to Indian Army in Dhaka

Today India is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Vijay Divas. On 16 December 1971, East Pakistan  turned into Bangladesh after winning long-fought war of independence against Pakistan with the help pf Indian Army. Indian Army had to get into a war with Pakistan Army for saving the people of East Pakistan from the brutalities of Pakistan Army. Indian Army, uder the military leadership of General Sam Manekshaw and political backing of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, inflicted humiliating defeat on Pakistan Army which was forced to surrender along with its 93,000 captured soldiers in Dhaka.

Especially significant is the fact that given its closeness to the US, India is intent on going ahead with its purchase of S 400 TRIUMF missiles, with the threat of CAATSA (though improbable) hanging over it. The security forces are fencing the borders to fortify the security along the international frontiers, BSF official told news agency IANS. Four northeastern states -- Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km), share an 1,880-km border with Bangladesh.

Indian Navy's Offshore Patrol Vessel, INS Savitri arrived ay Chattogram harbour on Thursday, carrying two 960 LPM (litres per minute) medical oxygen plants to support the ongoing efforts of the Bangladesh military and government agencies in combating the Covid pandemic in their country. These medical oxygen plants have been developed and manufactured by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The duo were identified as Younia Ali and Md Sagar, reportedly from Bangladesh's Patgram. According to local sources, the BSF has tightened its hold on the border area to check cattle smuggling. However, despite this, smugglers from Bangladesh allegedly continue to carry on with the illegal activity, using both open or barbed wire borders as corridors.

The case was earlier registered in West Bengal's Kolkata on July 10 this year under several sections of the IPC and Foreigners Act. The official said that the case relates to Bangladeshi nationals S.K. Shabbir, Joseph and others, who had illegally entered India and were sympathisers or members of terrorist organisations.

India handed over 577 intruders to Bangladesh since 2018

Officials in the Border Security Force (BSF) said these intruders were caught and handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) -- the border guarding force of the neighbouring country, which shares 4,096 km borders with India. Most of the times, these illegal infiltrators sneaked into the Indian territory by crossing the International Boundary (IB) in search of jobs.
