G-23 seeks speedy election of new Congress President, summoning of AICC session

The Congress' 'G-23' leaders, at their meeting held on Friday after the party's debacle in the latest round of Assembly polls, are understood to have sought that there be no more delay in electing the new party President while an AICC session should be called to discuss the poll results, sources said.

As per the Assembly election results declared on Thursday, the BJP is all set to form the government in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur, while it is just one short of the majority mark in Goa. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has swept the polls with a thumping majority. The Prime Minister also took a jibe at the poll pundits, saying that going by their logic, 2022's results have paved the way for 2024 for the BJP.

The AAP has won 73 seats and is leading in 19 others with 42 per cent vote share in Punjab, while the Congress has won 13 seats and is leading in five others with 22.92 per cent votes. The BJP has won two seats with a vote percentage of 6.6. The Shiromani Akali Dal has won two seats and is leading in one with 18.4 per cent votes.
