Telegram to Release User Data Upon Request from Authorities

"We clarified our terms of service to make clear that the IP addresses and phone numbers of violators of our rules can be made available in response to valid requests from law enforcement authorities," said Durov on Monday, indicating the messenger has revised its terms of service and privacy policy to bring them uniform worldwide, Xinhua news agency reported.

The co-founder of the encrypted messaging service Telegram said on his Telegram channel that it will disclose the information of users upon proper requests from authorities, such as arrests and investigations.

"We clarified our terms of service to make clear that the IP addresses and phone numbers of violators of our rules can be made available in response to valid requests from law enforcement authorities," said Durov on Monday, indicating the messenger has revised its terms of service and privacy policy to bring them uniform worldwide, Xinhua news agency reported.

Such measures were taken to "further deter criminals from abusing Telegram Search," he said.

Durov also mentioned that some users were using Telegram's search to trade with illegal goods, but the team eliminated all content from searches a couple of weeks ago.

A Russian citizen Durov was arrested last month in Paris and was later released on bail of $5.6 million for charges that include failing to act against users of Telegram whose activities include cyberbullying, sharing pedophilic content and glorifying terrorism. He is now under judicial supervision with a ban on leaving France.
