The concerns raised by Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, regarding potential violations of Indian IT laws by Google's Gemini AI chatbot have sparked attention. This reaction stems from observations made by users on the social media platform X, who shared Gemini AI responses concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent political figures from various countries.
Highlighting the issue, one user expressed dismay, stating, "This #GeminiAI from @google is not just woke, it's downright malicious @GoogleIndia. The GOI should take note." Chandrasekhar echoed these concerns, citing direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of the Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT Act and potentially breaching several provisions of the Criminal Code.
In response to the growing controversy, Google took action earlier this week by pausing Gemini AI's ability to generate images of individuals. This decision followed criticism over inaccuracies in AI-generated historical images. Specifically, the controversy erupted when images generated by Gemini AI depicted certain white figures, such as the US 'Founding Fathers,' and Nazi-era German soldiers as "people of colour."
Notably, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also weighed in on the matter, accusing Google of engaging in "racist, anti-civilizational programming" through its artificial intelligence (AI) models.
Google introduced image generation capabilities through its Gemini (formerly Bard) AI platform earlier this month, yet the recent developments have brought forth significant scrutiny and calls for regulatory action.
