The anticipated shipment of generative AI-driven smartphones is projected to exceed 100 million units next year, as highlighted in a report unveiled on Wednesday.
According to Counterpoint Research, the trajectory for GenAI smartphone shipments is forecasted to reach a staggering 522 million units by 2027, exhibiting a compelling Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 83%. The GenAI smartphones' market share is expected to hit 4% in 2023, doubling over the following year.
Research Director Tarun Pathak emphasized that while the share of GenAI smartphones in the overall market might remain in single digits in the near term, the industry anticipates significant excitement and heightened marketing around these innovative devices.
Pathak noted an anticipated inflection point in 2026 as GenAI smartphones penetrate diverse price segments, paving the way for broader adoption.
GenAI smartphones differentiate themselves from traditional AI-enabled devices by leveraging Generative AI to produce original content, rather than merely executing pre-programmed responses or predefined tasks. These devices will natively run size-optimized AI models and feature specific hardware specifications.
The short-term landscape for GenAI smartphones primarily focuses on four key areas: information provisioning, image creation, live translation, and personal assistant applications. Leaders in this realm include Samsung and Qualcomm, leveraging current product capabilities to spearhead advancements in this domain.
VP & Research Director Peter Richardson highlighted the evolving role of AI in smartphones, emphasizing the emergence of devices specifically optimized to run GenAI models. Expected use cases encompass personalized content creation, intelligent digital assistants with unique personalities and conversational styles, content recommendations, and more, propelling the next phase of innovation in smartphone technology.
