According to a Search Engine Land report that cited Statcounter data, Google's global search engine market share fell below 90 percent for the last three months of the year 2024. This is the first time this has occurred since 2015.
Google's market share in October 2024 was 89.34 percent, followed by 89.99 percent in November and 89.73 percent in December.
The last time that occurred was during March 2015 when it fell to 89.52%. It had also dropped in February of the same year at 89.47% and January of 89.62%.
"This is a Google search market-share decline, more pronounced in Asia," said the report which observed that it is generally consistent throughout other regions.
In the US, Google's search engine market share had reached an all-time high of 90.37% in November but plummeted to 87.39% in December.
### Conclusion:
To know whether users are opting for artificial intelligence (AI) search engines such as ChatGPT Search and Perplexity is not immediately apparent as Statcounter tracks mostly traditional search engines like Bing, Yandex, Yahoo, Baidu, and even DuckDuckGo and Ecosia.
Bing, Yandex, and Yahoo had taken some of Google's lost share with Bing ranking second place just at less than 4% market share for the last five months of 2024.
All of this also comes at a time when Google is under attack for nearly two years because of the rising unhelpfulness of its search results despite its US court-disputed monopoly status due to a consistent 90-92% market share for nearly a decade, according to the report.
