Google Grants Extended Period for Pilot Real-Money Gaming Apps in India

The expanded RMG support is scheduled to launch in June for developers targeting users in India, Mexico, and Brazil, with plans for further expansion to users in additional countries in the future, according to Karan Gambhir, Director of Global Trust and Safety Partnerships at Google.

Google has announced an extension of the grace period for pilot real-money gaming (RMG), daily fantasy sports (DFS), and Rummy apps in India until June. After this period, developers can distribute RMG apps on Google Play in compliance with local laws and the updated policy. Google Play will start supporting more RMG apps, including game types and operators not covered by existing licensing frameworks, based on the insights gained from the pilots.

Google had previously provided a grace period for existing pilot apps to remain on the Play Store until January 15, 2024. Now, the grace period has been extended until June 30, 2024, when the new policy will take effect.

In 2021, Google initiated the onboarding of a broader range of real-money gaming apps in markets with pre-existing licensing frameworks. Pilot programs were conducted to understand how to support more RMG operators and game types. The new approach aims to offer new business opportunities to developers globally while maintaining a focus on user safety. Existing developer policies on Google Play, such as age-gating and geo-gating for legal compliance, remain unchanged.
