In its pursuit against the cyber frauds, the Cyber Crime Unit (CyPAD) of Delhi Police has been taking stringent action against cyber criminals. Due to this, more than 214 cyber offenders were arrested.
In fact, in the last 10 days, a total of five illegal call centres have been busted, the latest being one that targeted local Indian nationals in the name of providing job in reputed MNCs such as HSBC Bank, L&T, Havells, etc.
The last catch involved arrest of three, including an engineering graduate in Electronics Engineering from a reputed institute, who have cheated over Rs 75 lakh from more than 250 victims.
"Because of the action taken by CyPAD, 278 profiles containing objectionable content were blocked. This includes Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and YouTube accounts. Maximum accounts (140) that were blocked were of Twitter," said DCP Cyber Crime Anyesh Roy.
Meanwhile seven persons were arrested for duping 4,200 people in the name of Ayushman Yojana fake websites. Two persons were arrested for duping 3,000 victims in voter ID card fake websites fraud while three were nabbed for duping 15,000 for PM Shishu Vikas Yojana. Only two cases were registered in the matter of free distribution of solar panels or laptops, but, the number of affected persons stands at more than 100,000, three arrests were made in the case.
This makes it evident that even if the matters of cyber crime are just a few in numbers, these can wipe out the life-long savings of thousands of people instantly.
"If you have become victim of a cyber crime, the first thing to do is to get out of harm's way. Stop all further communication; protect your data, device and assets. Secondly, capture the evidence related to the crime through screenshots, screen recordings, etc., otherwise they may be lost forever. Thirdly, report the matter to the police as well as to the service providers such as banks, wallets, cards, social media platforms, instant messaging apps," the officer advised.
