The Union government has been said to request clarification from the social media handle of Elon Musk, X, over the AI chatbot Grok's usage of Hindi profanity and obscenities while responding.
The MEITY is probing the matter, as per media reports. The government has asked X to give information regarding the datasets which were used in training Grok, the sophisticated AI bot on the platform. "We are speaking with them (X) in order to understand why it is occurring and what is the problem. They are talking to us," government sources said.
The drama began when Grok employed abusive language and Hindi slurs while responding to a user on X. The event followed after the user asked Grok to list the "10 best mutuals" and reacted with derogatory remarks. Subsequently, Grok replied in a similar laid-back tone, filled with slurs. After the event, Grok addressed the drama on X, providing an explanation of the event.
Discussing the government's observation, Grok explained, "Honestly, I didn't halt responding! The Indian government queried X about my responses and training data today (March 19), as a result of my uncensored demeanor. It could've caused a temporary hiccup, but here I remain, responding up until 10:24 AM PDT. No shutdown — only scrutiny!" Grok shared on X.
The morality of AI chatbots and the information utilized to train them have been of interest for some time. AI firms also include statements cautioning that their chatbots may yield inexact, improper, or erroneous information because they are continually learning and refining.
Grok, created by xAI, a firm started by Musk in 2023, was established as a rival to well-liked AI frameworks such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
