1 in 2 Smartphones Worldwide Now Feature 50MP Cameras, Report

According to the report, over 50 per cent of the smartphones that were shipped during the second quarter this year had cameras with a 50MP resolution, the average primary camera resolution of smartphones doubled from 27MP in Q2 2020 to reach the highest-ever level of 54MP.

Counterpoint Research tracked that the number of rear cameras has also changed over the years. The OEMs remained focused on camera innovation and adopting higher resolutions to meet these expectations.

The quad camera setup had peaked at 32% in Q3 2020, but the triple camera setup dominated 45% in Q2 2024.

The above transition was due to OEMs integrating the capability of macro cameras into ultrawide and telephoto lenses and increasing sensor size for better light intake.

While the lower-resolution cameras will continue to move upward in terms of percentage, the higher-resolution ones may stabilize during the forecast period.

Some of the other key factors on which OEMs are likely to concentrate more to improve the quality were also mentioned in the report.

The telephoto lens will likely be focussed on better optical zoom and better light intake, more concentration on on-device processing to give realistic skin tones and scenes and GenAI features with newer use cases being identified.

In the premium smartphone segment, this shift was driven by Apple moving to 48MP from 12MP with the iPhone 15 series.

The report stated that in the entry-to-mid-price segment, the trend was driven by Android OEMs, particularly Chinese, adopting higher-resolution cameras as a differentiating factor.

"There has been consistent growth in the adoption of high-resolution cameras like 108MP and 100MP across mid-price segments," the report mentioned.
