Asked about vice-captain Rishabh Pant's remarkable achievement—only the second wicketkeeper-batter to score twin centuries in one Test—Gambhir deflected attention.

Ex-India head coach Gautam Gambhir declined to draw attention to personal performances after India lost the inaugural Test against England by five wickets at Headingley, Leeds.

Asked about vice-captain Rishabh Pant's remarkable achievement—only the second wicketkeeper-batter to score twin centuries in one Test—Gambhir deflected attention.

He pointed out that the game had three other centurions and intimated, perhaps politely, that the question might have been better framed.

"There are three more centuries as well. Those are big positives as well. Thank you," Gambhir said in the post-match press conference.

"I would have liked if you said there was a hundred from Yashasvi (Jaiswal), hundred from Shubman (Gill) on debut as captain.

"(There was a) hundred from KL (Rahul) and two centuries from Rishabh, so five centuries in a Test match is a great start to be honest. And hopefully the question could have been better," he added.

India became the first team in the Test era to lose despite scoring five individual centuries in a game, and made an unpleasant entry into the record books. Looking back at the defeat, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir recognized Jasprit Bumrah's five-wicket performance in the first innings as a significant positive learning experience. Although visibly disappointed by the result, Gambhir stressed the need for looking forward and taking on the challenges that lie ahead.

"But again these are great positives, we had a fifer from Jasprit Bumrah as well. Eventually everything boils down to the fact that...we go out there to get the results," he said.

"Yes, Individual performances are good, we want those big runs from our top six, seven which we got in this Test match. But at the end of the day you go out there to win a Test match.

"Unfortunately that wasn't the result. So we take it on the chin and move forward," the 43-year-old added.

The Test is next set to be held at Edgbaston, Birmingham on July 2. India had played here for the last time in 2022, when it was Jasprit Bumrah's first match as Test captain. In that game, there was a great run chase of 378, fueled by centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, who gave India a disappointing loss.
