Cristiano Ronaldo was left devastated after Portugal's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended with a Round of 16 defeat against Spain on Monday. Although the 41-year-old had already confirmed that the tournament would be his final World Cup appearance, the legendary forward has indicated that he is not ready to make an immediate decision about ending his international career.
Following Portugal's 0-1 loss, Ronaldo said he would take time to reflect on his future rather than make an emotional choice immediately after the disappointment. The all-time leading scorer in international football also looked back on his journey with the national team, highlighting Portugal's major achievements during his era.
While winning the World Cup remained an unfulfilled ambition, Ronaldo said Portugal's triumph at the 2016 European Championship holds immense importance for him and is comparable to football's biggest prize.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said he needed time away with his family before deciding his next move. His comments came despite his sister having suggested before the Round of 16 clash that the former Real Madrid star would retire from international football after the tournament.
"I am sad to be leaving the World Cup like this. I gave it my all. I did my best, and I am leaving with a clear conscience. It was my last World Cup, yes, but I will now have time to reflect and be with my family. I will not be making any rash decisions."
"I don't make decisions in the heat of the moment," he added.
Ronaldo also responded to discussions surrounding his legacy with Portugal, pointing to the trophies won during his international career. He said he had helped the national side secure three major titles — the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League trophies in 2019 and 2025.
"I have won three titles for Portugal; before Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal hadn't won a single title. The biggest title the national team has ever won was in 2016, the European Championship, which, to be honest, is just as significant to me as a World Cup," he added.
The forward also praised Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, who stepped down after the team's World Cup elimination. Ronaldo expressed his appreciation for the coach's contribution and leadership.
"I loved working with him," he said. "A great manager, a great human being, and what he's done for Portugal is to be commended. I want to thank him and wish him every happiness... It is always sad to be knocked out of a major tournament. It is the World Cup. The team was really coming into its own. We played well, in my view. It could have gone either way, but that's football. We have to pick ourselves up and carry on," Ronaldo signed off.
