Indian para-athletes returned with a haul of 29 medals from the Paralympic Games in Paris, making it the best-ever performance at the Games. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated them via social media on X: "The relentless commitment and unstoppable spirit of these para athletes are commendable to say the least."
"Paralympics 2024 have been special and historical," said the post by Prime Minister Modi on X.
"India is delighted that our magnificent para-athletes have won 29 medals, which is the best ever performance since India's first appearance at the Games. This feat is the result of relentless hard work and an unconquerable spirit of our athletes. Their performance has given us so many moments to cherish and inspired many budding athletes," he added.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games drew the curtains on Sunday evening.
The closing ceremony at Stade de France was attended by almost 64,000 spectators, over 8,500 athletes, and accompanying staff.
After 11 days of competitions, the Indian para-athletes returned home with seven golds, nine silvers, and 13 bronze medals.
India's first medal in the Paralympics came for the 1972 Games, when Murlikant Petkar secured a gold medal in swimming. In all, prior to the 2024 Games, India had won 31 medals across 12 Paralympic Games.
