'Some decisions didn't go in my favour': Shreyas Iyer opens up on his omission from T20 World Cup 2024

In the previous ODI World Cup, Iyer emerged as the third highest run-scorer for India, amassing 530 runs at an average of 66.25, which included two centuries and three half-centuries.

Shreyas Iyer said on Friday that a "lack of communication" and some unfavorable decisions affected him after last year's ODI World Cup. However, he emphasized that his performance on the field would be his response in the future.

In the previous ODI World Cup, Iyer emerged as the third highest run-scorer for India, amassing 530 runs at an average of 66.25, which included two centuries and three half-centuries.

Despite his achievements, Iyer was omitted from the BCCI's central contract list for the period from October 2023 to September 2024. This was due to a perception that he, along with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, had prioritized the IPL over domestic cricket.

Kishan skipped domestic cricket in the first half of the year and only resumed competitive play just before the IPL. In contrast, Iyer participated in a few Ranji Trophy matches for Mumbai. Although he missed the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal, he played in the semifinal and the final, where he scored a quick 95 against Vidarbha.

Reflecting on his performance, Iyer said in a video released on his YouTube account, "I had a tremendous World Cup and I wanted to take a break after that, work on my body (and) build some strength around certain areas."

"Due to lack of communication, there were some decisions that didn't go in my favour. But at the end of the day, the bat is always going to be in my hand and it's on me how to perform and win trophies," he added.

"I decided that once I win Ranji Trophy and IPL, that would be an apt answer for whatever happened in the past and thankfully, everything fell to the right place," added Iyer, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title win this year, he further said.

After undergoing back surgery in April 2023, Iyer found confidence by pushing himself in net sessions at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
