In the first semi-final of the ICC ODI World Cup at Wankhede Stadium, Mohammed Shami etched his name in history as the fastest bowler to reach 50 wickets against New Zealand.
Shami achieved this milestone in just 17 innings, outpacing Starc's record of 19. Joining an elite group featuring Glenn McGrath, Muttiah Muralitharan, Starc, Lasith Malinga, Wasim Akram, and Trent Boult, Shami is the seventh bowler to achieve the 50-wicket landmark in the World Cup.
His outstanding performance against New Zealand included a formidable spell of 7 for 57 in 9.5 overs, showcasing his prowess on the grand stage. This marked Shami's fourth five-wicket haul in ODI World Cups, surpassing Australia's Mitchell Starc, who achieved it thrice. The Bengal speedster's current tally of 23 scalps in just six matches makes him the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing World Cup.
Shami's dominance extends beyond this semi-final clash, as he had earlier claimed five-wicket hauls against New Zealand and Sri Lanka in the league stage.
With a stellar display, Shami continues to leave an indelible mark, solidifying his position as a force to be reckoned with in the World Cup's bowling arena.
