On Sunday, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami received a death threat via email, prompting the Cyber Crime Police Station in Amroha district, Uttar Pradesh, to file an FIR.

The FIR was registered on Monday following directions from the Superintendent of Police (SP), with the complaint being filed by Shami’s brother, Haseeb. The email threat was reportedly sent by an individual named Rajput Sindar.

The attacker has also asked for a ransom of ₹1 crore from Shami, who is currently committed playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The case is under investigation by the police under multiple sections, i.e., Indian Penal Code (BNS) Section 308(4), Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 Section 66d, and Section 66e.

In the current IPL 2025 season, Shami has appeared in nine games for SRH but managed to capture only six wickets at a strike rate of 56.17 runs per wicket. In spite of his current IPL being in shambles, Shami was in top shape when India won the Champions Trophy by taking nine wickets in five matches, of which the pick was a five-wicket haul against Bangladesh in the opening game in Dubai.

This is a follow-up to the previous similar incident last month when Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir also received an email death threat. Delhi Police confirmed that they were investigating the threat, and DCP (Central) V. Harsha Vardhan said Gambhir, who was under Delhi Police protection, would not be given specific information made available on security arrangements. The threat of murder to Gambhir followed a dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people were murdered and a few more injured.

A complaint was filed with the Delhi Police subsequently, with Gambhir's office filing a formal complaint for the security of his family.
