Shaheen Afridi Requested Break from Third Test Against Australia, Confirms Pakistan Team Director Hafeez

Hafeez explained that Afridi approached them, expressing his desire for a break due to concerns about managing his workload and avoiding potential adverse effects on his body.

Muhammad Hafeez, the Director of the Pakistan team, clarified that the decision to rest Shaheen Shah Afridi during the third Test against Australia was at the player's request, contrary to earlier beliefs that it was solely the team management's decision.

Hafeez explained that Afridi approached them, expressing his desire for a break due to concerns about managing his workload and avoiding potential adverse effects on his body. He highlighted Afridi's extensive workload since his return from injury, emphasizing the importance of managing it to prevent any harm to the player's career.

This decision sparked criticism from former Pakistani cricket legends, including Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, who questioned the team management's choice to rest Afridi during the Test match.

Hafeez defended the decision, asserting that it was made to safeguard Afridi's well-being and workload management. He clarified that the rest period was not linked to Afridi being named Pakistan's captain for the upcoming T20I series in New Zealand, which starts on January 12.

Furthermore, Hafeez hinted that Babar Azam, the premier batter, might also be given a break if required, although he expressed confidence in Azam's abilities, despite a recent dip in form. However, any decision regarding Azam's rest would be made after discussions with the player himself.
