On Sunday, the family of Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza confirmed the separation between her and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, a day after Malik announced his second marriage with actor Sana Javed. The announcement marked the end of a high-profile union that had captured the interest of sports enthusiasts in both countries.
Shoaib Malik, 41, shared his wedding picture with Sana on social media platforms on Saturday. In response to the public curiosity, a statement issued by Sania Mirza's family disclosed, "Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead!"
The family requested fans and well-wishers to refrain from speculating and to respect Sania Mirza's need for privacy during this sensitive period. Rumors about the strained relationship between Malik and Mirza had circulated for a while, gaining momentum when Malik unfollowed Mirza on Instagram.
