Mumbai Indians won a tightly contested four-wicket win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025 Match 33, courtesy a tight bowling spell by Jasprit Bumrah and skipper Hardik Pandya.
The pick of the bowlers was Will Jacks, who claimed two wickets and added an important 36 runs to see Mumbai through for their second straight win at Wankhede Stadium.
Chosing to bowl first on the same wicket on which they had bowled out Kolkata Knight Riders for 116 earlier, Mumbai bowlers used the conditions to their advantage. They were able to limit Sunrisers Hyderabad to 162/5 in their 20 overs. The chase in Mumbai was a team effort, with contributions from Ryan Rickelton (31), Will Jacks (36), Rohit Sharma (26), Suryakumar Yadav (26), and Tilak Varma (21*), as they chased the target of 163 with 11 balls to spare, coming to 166/6 in 18.1 overs.
But the win margin could have been more had captain Hardik Pandya not been caught for a glory shot with only two runs needed.
This victory brought Mumbai to six points, advancing them to seventh position in the IPL 2025 standings and out of the points table logjam. Sunrisers Hyderabad, still at four points, continue near the bottom of the table.
Chasing 163 on a pitch that continued to assist the bowlers, Mumbai’s chase began with fireworks from Rohit Sharma, who smashed three sixes early. However, just as it seemed like Rohit was ready to take control, he was dismissed, hitting a low full-toss from Pat Cummins to Travis Head at mid-off.
Both Jacks and Rickelton experienced moments of luck during the middle overs. Jacks was dropped by Head, and Rickelton received a lifeline when Cummins dropped a catch off a no-ball. Rickelton then scored 31 off 23 balls before he was caught by Head off Harshal Patel's skier.
Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav put on a vital 52-run stand at 69/2, taking Mumbai over the 100-run barrier. Yadav's 26 off two sixes off Zeeshan Ansari was brought to an end when he got a lofted shot wrong off Cummins. Jacks also got out for 36, caught by Ansari off Cummins, leaving Mumbai at 121/3.
Even with these interruptions, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya stabilized the vessel, leading Mumbai towards the target. Pandya's dismissal, trying a big shot with only two runs to win, introduced some drama towards the conclusion, but Varma kept calm and completed the game with a boundary, remaining on 21, not out.
Earlier, Mumbai’s bowlers had done well to keep Sunrisers Hyderabad under pressure throughout their innings. Will Jacks claimed 2-14 in his three overs, while Jasprit Bumrah (1-21), Trent Boult (1-29), and Hardik Pandya (1-42) were also successful in their respective spells.
Sunrisers Hyderabad struggled to make a solid start. Both the openers, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, had a close shave early on, but Abhishek got into rhythm with a string of boundaries. He hit Deepak Chahar for three fours in one over, taking SRH to 46/0 at the powerplay.
Hardik Pandya, back after an ankle problem, gave Mumbai their opening, removing Abhishek for 40 off 28 balls, caught at the boundary by replacement Raj Bawa. Jacks chipped in as well, getting Ishan Kishan stumped by Ryan Rickelton for a mere two runs, and taking out Head for 28, caught by Mitchell Santner.
In the latter half of the innings, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen tried to accelerate but Reddy got out on 19 runs from Boult. Klaasen dug his heels in, hitting a six off Chahar and adding 21 runs off one over. But his resistance came to an end as he got out to Bumrah on 37.
Aniket Verma struck a couple of sixes against Hardik Pandya, while Pat Cummins ended the innings with a six, leaving Sunrisers Hyderabad with a sub-par score of 162/5.
Mumbai Indians, though with a few hiccups, chased the target easily in the end, winning the match with four wickets to spare.
