Men's ODI WC : Angelo Mathews Becomes The First Cricketer to Be Dismissed 'Timed Out'

Mathews was set to come to the crease as the No.6 batter for Sri Lanka after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed.

Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews made an unusual and historic exit in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh. He became the first cricketer to be dismissed 'timed out' in international cricket.

Mathews was set to come to the crease as the No.6 batter for Sri Lanka after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed. However, he faced a delay as he had issues with his helmet, possibly having brought the wrong one and requested a replacement. Bangladesh, led by Shakib Al Hasan, appealed for a 'time-out' dismissal.

According to the rules of the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club), the incoming batter must be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. Failure to meet this requirement results in the incoming batter being declared 'Timed Out.'

This incident was a rare occurrence in international cricket, adding an unusual twist to the match. At the time of this report, Sri Lanka was five wickets down for a total of 180 in 32.3 overs.
