Indian badminton players Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the men's doubles quarterfinals at the Malaysia Open Super 1000 tournament. The duo, ranked World No. 2, defeated the French pair Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar in straight games, setting up a clash with China's He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu in the quarterfinals.
However, Kidambi Srikanth faced disappointment as he failed to progress beyond the second round. Srikanth lost to Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long Angus in a closely contested match, ending his journey in the men's singles category.
On the women's doubles front, the Indian pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto caused an upset by defeating the seventh-seeded Japanese pair of Wakana Nagahara and Mayu Matsumoto. The Indian duo won the match 21-19, 13-21, 21-15, advancing to the next round and keeping their hopes alive for qualifying for the Paris Olympics.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, known for their aggressive playing style, had a successful 2023 with six titles. They will be looking to continue their good form in the Malaysia Open Super 1000 and build momentum ahead of major tournaments.
