New Zealand has lost fast bowler Ben Sears for the start of their Test series against India, which commences on Wednesday. Sears suffered a knee injury and will not be featuring in the first test. Jacob Duffy, an uncapped bowler, has been called in as his replacement.
Sears, who was suffering from pain in his left knee, went through scans in New Zealand last week following injury during training for the recent Test series in Sri Lanka.
His trip to India was delayed when a scan revealed a tear in his meniscus and the first available medical consultation was sought in the hope that perhaps he might have been cleared. However, after the medical advice, he was ruled out for the series," New Zealand Cricket said in a statement.
"We're obviously disappointed for Ben, who made a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and offers a genuine pace option. It remains to be seen how long we'll be without him for, but we're hopeful his road to a full recovery will be a short one," said Head coach Gary Stead.
Duffy is New Zealand's all-time highest wicket taker from Otago. So far, in his career, he has taken 299 wickets in the First Class. He has played six ODIs and 14 T20Is so far.
"Exciting for Jacob as he has been around the Test squad previously. With three Tests in hand, he has every chance of making his Test debut," said Stead.
"Jacob's recent experience playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship certainly pushed his place. His performances in white-ball cricket for the BLACKCAPS have always been impressive and we're confident he'll be able to contribute if called upon," he added.
The opening Test of the three-match series begins on Wednesday here at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
