Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who suffered from back spasms, is expected to be out for most of India's white-ball home series against England and will miss out on the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to begin on February 19.
Bumrah, who was India's stand out player with 32 wickets in their 1-3 thrashing at the hands of Australia in the just-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, couldn't bowl in the final innings of the series here after suffering back spasms.
The 30-year-old Bumrah who bowled more than 150 overs in the series.
The injury has an obvious connection with his over-worked schedule in the series, and the BCCI medical team will look to make sure that the new Test captain is available for the ICC showpiece, where his participation is a necessity to India's chances.
The grade of the back spasm that Bumrah is suffering from has not yet been ascertained, sources privy to the development revealed.
India are to play their Champions Trophy against Bangladesh on 20 February at Dubai.
A Grade 1 category injury means minimum two-three weeks of rehab time before Return to Play.
The Grade 2 takes the whole time to a week up, whereas the worst Grade 3 category would be having at least a minimum period of three months to stay without engaging in physical activity or joining the rehabilitation programme.
It was always known that Bumrah will not play T20I bilateral series as this is not the World Cup year, but with the Champions Trophy around the corner, he would have certainly played two if not three ODIs against England as its the 50-over format.
But now, the grade of his injury will decide whether Bumrah plays the England series at all or at least the last match at his home ground in Ahmedabad on February 12 to check on his fitness.
India will face England in five T20Is and three ODIs from January 22.
