Following his stint as Mumbai Indians' captain in their IPL 2025 opener following the absence of Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav achieved a significant individual milestone during the match against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.
The flamboyant batsman became only the eighth cricketer to play 100 Indian Premier League matches for the Mumbai team. He now joins a select group that comprises MI legends Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Ambati Rayudu.
To celebrate the milestone, Suryakumar was presented with a special, customized jersey before the match.
One of the key gears in MI's batting machine, Suryakumar has also helped the side win two IPL titles in 2019 and 2020. He is one of a mere three batters who have scored more than 3000 runs for the side in the tournament.
His figures further emphasize his worth: a staggering average of 35.53 and a swift strike rate of 148.91 — both second-best among the top ten run-makers in the team's history. Appreciating his consistent returns, MI kept him before the mega auctions both in 2022 and 2025.
Suryakumar's effort is also brought to the fore by his two IPL hundreds for Mumbai, which brings him on par with Rohit Sharma for the most MI player hundreds. He's been the pillar of the team's batting lineup over the years, performing in different roles — as an opener or in the pivotal No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
He's also one of only two players, along with Rohit, to have scored 25 half-centuries for the team. Nobody has scored more fifties or runs for the team since he rejoined the Mumbai set-up in 2018.
His 116 sixes in Mumbai shades him third in the franchise's all-time list only behind Rohit and Pollard. Interestingly, he is the lone Indian other than Sachin Tendulkar to cross the 500-run barrier in two IPL seasons for MI — notching 605 runs in 2023 and 512 in 2018.
