During Match 12 of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday, Mumbai Indians have won the toss and decided to bowl first against Kolkata Knight Riders. Former skipper Rohit Sharma was, therefore, replaced on the substitutes' bench by taking on an Impact Substitute's role.
Mumbai Indians made some changes, adding Will Jacks and giving left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar a debut. Vignesh Puthur was also added to the playing XI and is likely to give way to Rohit Sharma when MI start their chase.
Kolkata Knight Riders, as anticipated, brought Sunil Narine back into the XI in place of Moeen Ali. Narine had missed their previous match against Rajasthan Royals due to illness.
Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya justified the decision to bowl first by saying that they wanted to utilize the new wicket to the fullest and make use of any initial swing. He also said that dew might become a major factor once the match went into the night.
Pandya minimized the losses Mumbai experienced in the first two games by focusing on the long length of the tournament. He hoped the team would rectify matters that evening and admitted that they needed to play better cricket to make it happen.
Kolkata Knight Riders' captain Ajinkya Rahane acknowledged that he would have preferred bowling first too but wasn't sure, hence making it a "good toss to lose." He was also sure about their bowling unit's capability to defend a score.
